How To Create An Inviting Front Porch

As we near the holidays, chances are, more and more people will be coming to visit you. Your front porch is a great opportunity to set the tone for what your guests will see as they enter your home. I’m excited to share some quick steps to create an inviting front porch that can easily be put together on your own, no matter how big or small the space is!

Layering different textures is my favorite way to turn a hard, cold space into something soft and inviting. Here’s how you achieve that.

Doormats. Don’t settle for just one doormat. If you struggle with making design decisions, in this case it’s okay! Layering an outdoor rug under your doormat is a great way to add more interest and texture while softening an otherwise cold, hard surface. So you can take your favorite “worded” doormat and your favorite patterned outdoor rug and use them both to welcome in your guests!

Potted plants. There’s nothing more welcoming than some beautiful greenery or flowers to invite your guests in. Even if you only have room for one small plant, I guarantee it will brighten the mood of everyone who walks up to your door. The use of a beautiful piece of pottery in combination with a fun plant or flowers is another easy way to layer textures and add visual interest to the space. If you don’t have room to flank both sides of your door with plants, go up instead. By using a tall pot, a plant stand, or even a hanging planter, you can focus on the height of the space rather than the lack of width.

Wreaths. Since we are coming up on the holidays where wreaths are increasingly popular, you may have already started thinking about adding one to your front door. But even after the holidays are over, switch out that cedar wreath for a pretty spring floral wreath. Just like potted plants, it’s a great way to soften the space and a quick and easy way to change the look of your porch based on the current season.

Seating. If you have the room, nothing says come hang out at my home quite like a comfy sitting area on your front porch. Step it up a notch by adding outdoor pillows and throw blankets that will make your guests want to stay to finish a whole cup of your freshly brewed tea.

Lastly, think about what your underlying style is. Personally, I don’t like to limit myself to just one; I believe deeply in blending styles for a more personal look. It may be easier to start with one favorite style and over time you might find you enjoy blending as much as I do. Just be sure to carry that theme and a simple color palette all the way through your home and onto your porch.  It will set the stage for your guests and they’ll be excited to see what the rest of your home has to offer.
